Setting Up Your VoIP Phone

Getting Started with Your VoIP Phone

Welcome to Brisco Communications! This guide will walk you through the process of setting up your new VoIP phone system.

What You'll Need

  • Your VoIP phone device (provided by Brisco Communications)
  • High-speed internet connection
  • Power adapter (included with your phone)
  • Ethernet cable (included with your phone)
  • Your account credentials (provided in your welcome email)

Step 1: Connect Your Phone

Start by physically connecting your VoIP phone:

  1. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the port labeled "LAN" or "Internet" on your VoIP phone.
  2. Connect the other end to an available Ethernet port on your router or network switch.
  3. Connect the power adapter to your phone and plug it into a power outlet.
  4. Wait for the phone to power on. This typically takes 1-2 minutes.

Step 2: Configure Network Settings

Most Brisco VoIP phones will automatically obtain an IP address from your network. If your phone doesn't connect automatically, follow these steps:

  1. Press the "Menu" or "Settings" button on your phone.
  2. Navigate to "Network Configuration" or similar option.
  3. Select "DHCP" for automatic IP assignment (recommended for most users).
  4. If using static IP, enter the IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS server information provided by your network administrator.
  5. Save the settings and allow the phone to restart if prompted.

Step 3: Enter Your Account Credentials

Now you'll need to set up your SIP account:

  1. From the phone's menu, navigate to "SIP Settings" or "Account Settings".
  2. Select "Account 1" or "Line 1" to configure your primary line.
  3. Enter the following information (provided in your welcome email):
    • SIP Server: sip.briscocom.com
    • SIP User ID: Your assigned phone number or username
    • Authentication ID: Your assigned authentication ID
    • Password: Your assigned password
    • Display Name: Your name or company name (optional)
  4. Save the settings. The phone will attempt to register with our servers.

Step 4: Test Your Connection

Once your phone displays "Registered" or shows your phone number, you're connected to our service. Let's make a test call:

  1. Dial 1234 (our test number) and press the call button.
  2. You should hear a message confirming that your phone is working properly.
  3. If the test is successful, try calling your cell phone to verify outbound calling.

Troubleshooting

Phone Not Registering

If your phone shows "Not Registered" or "Registration Failed":

  • Double-check your SIP credentials (username, password, server).
  • Verify your internet connection is working.
  • Check that your router is not blocking SIP traffic (ports 5060-5061).
  • Try restarting your phone and router.

Poor Call Quality

If you experience echoes, delays, or choppy audio:

  • Test your internet speed at speedtest.net (you need at least 100 Kbps up/down per line).
  • Use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi if possible.
  • Make sure your router prioritizes VoIP traffic (QoS settings).

Additional Features

Your VoIP phone comes with several useful features:

  • Call Forwarding: Press *72 followed by the forwarding number and #
  • Voicemail Access: Press *97 or the voicemail button on your phone
  • Call Transfer: Press the Transfer button during a call, dial the destination number, and press Transfer again
  • Conference Call: Press the Conference button during a call, dial the additional number, and press Conference again when they answer
